Graduate Assessment

Programs: MS - Computer Engineering
MS - Electrical Engineering
PhD - Electrical Engineering
Learning Objective Assessment Plan Outcomes Data Data-Based Decisions
An ability to analyze a problem, identify critical aspects, and devise appropriate methods to solve the problem. Evaluate student grades in graduate course work.  On a 4.0 scale, cumulative GPAs above 3.0 are acceptable.   100% of graduates met this criteria No changes needed
An ability to read and understand research literature and communicate a coherent summary of said literature both in writing and orally. PhD students evaluated on their understanding of research papers in their field in qualifying exam and oral exam.  Both PhD and MS students must summarize prior work in their thesis/dissertation and discuss it orally during their defense. 100% of graduates met this criteria at a minimum level Graduate program directory and technical writing specialist continue to work with graduate students in the required graduate colloquium seminar (ECE 6800).
An ability to explain the contrast between prior work and their proposed approach to research problems both in writing and orally. Students must address their contributions in their thesis/dissertation and discuss it orally during their defense. 100% of graduates met this criteria at a minimum level Graduate program directory and technical writing specialist continue to work with graduate students in the required graduate colloquium seminar (ECE 6800).
An ability to propose and carry out a plan of work and describe said plan and results both in writing and orally. PhD students required to write and orally present a research proposal describing their research plan.  The results of student research are written in MS theses and PhD dissertations and presented orally at the defense. 100% of graduates met this criteria at a minimum level No changes needed
An ability to publish research findings in peer-reviewed venues. Query students at the time of their defense about the number of conference and journal papers submitted and published. Of five PhD students graduated in 2016, all have submitted papers, and four have published papers.  Of nine MS students graduated in 2016, four have submitted papers and two have published papers. Continue to encourage faculty mentors to help their students submit, revise as needed, and publish their work.
An ability to gain employment or secure advanced placement at a university in their desired field. Query students' employment status at the time of their defense.  An employment rate above 90% is acceptable. In last two years, over 95% of MS and PhD graduates had accepted employment in their field or acceptance at another university at the time of their defense. No changes needed
