Project Description

I worked on a Star Constellation Finder for my final project. This device can point out different star constellations in the night sky regardless of the time of night, day of the year, or the location of the user in the northern hemisphere. Currently the location is hard coded to Logan, Utah, however, this could be changed with minimal effort. This can be useful to scouts who are tiring to earn their astronomy merit badge and people who want to learn the locations of star constellations in the night sky. While designing and building the device I had to work with a variety of electrical devices including a general purpose microcontroller, servo motor, stepper motor, stepper motor driver, a human infrared sensor module, laser module and an LCD using a serial port interface. Many of these devices were selected t o help make the device safe, easy to use, and robust. The two primary concerns were safety and simplicity of use. The Star Constellation Finder is easy to use and useful in finding star constellations at night.
