Graduate Program Overview
The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to serve society through excellence in learning, discovery, and outreach. We provide undergraduate and graduate students an education in electrical and computer engineering, and we aspire to instill in them attitudes, values, and visions that will prepare them for lifetimes of continued learning and leadership in their chosen careers. Through research, the department strives to generate and disseminate new knowledge and technology for the benefit of the State of Utah, the nation, and beyond.
The ECE Department offers a balanced curriculum of class work, laboratory work, and design experiences to prepare students for careers as practicing engineers. The Bachelor of Science programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). The research program of the department, which includes undergraduates as well as graduate students, is internationally acclaimed in the fields of aerospace instrumentation and measurements, image compression, communications, electromagnetics, controls and robotics.

Graduate studies in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at USU include opportunities to work with faculty and other graduate students who are involved in cutting-edge research and relevant coursework. Faculty are interested in developing graduate students into world-class researchers or professionals with up-to-date knowledge of developments in Electrical and Computer Engineering. USU is known for our personal touch, and students are an important part of our success and have regular access to faculty for mentoring in both research pursuits and career advisement.
Nearly all of our students in research-oriented degree programs have the opportunity to work on projects in a 'Research Assistant' position before the completion of their degree. This means that the students can receive financial support by working on the same project tasks that are required to complete the thesis, project report, or dissertation required for their degree. The research projects are in many of the emphasis areas in the ECE department, including signal and image processing, communications, control systems, E&M, computer systems, space engineering, and power systems.
Students on our Master of Engineering (ME) degree program have the chance to advance their technical knowledge through coursework in areas that can lead to professional development and career advancement.
