The Master of Science (MS) in Electrical Engineering is a research-based degree. Two plans are offered. MS-Plan A is a thesis and MS-Plan B is a project and report. Successful completion (3.0 GPA or higher) of a minimum of 30 credits is required for both plans. A C or better grade is required in each course.

Requirements for the Degree:
  1. At least 3 credits of ECE coursework must be completed at the 7000 level.
  1. At least 12 credits (excluding thesis and ECE 6800 Seminar) of ECE coursework must be completed at or above the 6000 level. 
  1. Thesis requirements:
MS Plan A: Must complete 6 credits of Thesis Research (ECE 6970) .
MS Plan B: Must complete 3 credits of Thesis Research (ECE 6970) and 3 credits of Design Project (ECE 6950).
  1. No more than 15 credits of ECE 5000-level, non-ECE courses, or Independent Study may be applied toward the MS in Electrical Engineering degree. 
  1. Two semesters - .5 credit each – of ECE 6800 Graduate Colloquium
Additional Requirements:
  1. If a student is funded for the Master’s degree program by a fellowship or research funds, he/she is required to complete the MS degree. 
  1. If a student (funded or not) chooses an MS degree, changing to the ME degree is only possible by approval of the Major Professor, the ECE Graduate Committee, and the Department Head.
  1. No more than 1 course (3-4 credits) of ECE 5930/6930/7930 Independent Study may be counted toward the MS degree. Registration for ECE 5930/6930/7930 Independent Study requires prior approval (by the responsible instructor, the student's committee, and the Department Head) of a written proposal by the student of the work to be performed and any reports to be prepared. 
  1. No more than two ECE Special Topics courses that are “Taught On Demand” or “Taught on a One-Time Basis” are allowed unless otherwise approved by the student’s committee.
  1. No more than one credit of ECE 6250 Internship may be counted toward the MS degree. Registration for ECE 6250 Internship requires prior approval (by the student’s committee and the Department Head) of a description of your project with defined deliverables, signed by your Company Intern Supervisor, ECE Internship Coordinator, and Student. The Internship project must be directly related to your research as outlined by the Program of Study. 
  1. The student’s Program of Study and any subsequent deviations must be approved by the student’s committee.
  1. MS Plan A and MS Plan B students will need to submit a written proposal. It must have a signed title page (by the student’s committee) and include a list of literary references. No formal proposal defense will be held.
